The actress, who rose to fame with her portrayal of princess Leia from the Star Wars franchise, has died on the 27th December. The news came four days after Fisher suffered a heart attack on a flight to Los Angeles, 15 minutes before the landing. The actress received emergency treatment on the plane and once the latter had landed, was then rushed to UCLA Medical Center where she remained in intensive care until her death.
“It is with a very deep sadness that Billie Lourd confirms that her beloved mother Carrie Fisher passed away at 8.55 this morning”, said a statement from family spokesman Simon Halls. “She was loved by the world and she will be missed profoundly. Our entire family thanks you for your thoughts and prayers.”
Aside from her famous appearance in the Star Wars movies, Fisher was known as a mental health advocate. Suffering from bipolar disorder and drug addiction, she also spoke out on her own struggles, a topic addressed among others in her semi-autobiographical novel “Postcards from the Edge” and in “Wishful Drinking”.
Several co-stars and fans have mourned the death of the actress, 80s icon, activist and face behind one of the most well-known female warriors in science-fiction on social media, stating among others that “the Force is dark today”.
